Renowned Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger joined the BBC Philharmonic for Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major, showcasing the warm, expressive, lyrical side of the modern valved trumpet. His custom cadenza in the first movement captivated the audience, while Conductor John Storgårds and the orchestra provided poised support.

Later, Hardenberger performed Onze Lieder by Betsy Jolas, using extreme registers and various mutes to produce unique sounds, and creating atmospheric music in tandem with the orchestral trumpet and sparkling percussion. As an encore, Hardenberger performed Roland Pöntinen’s arrangement of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now with a string orchestra, surprising and delighting the audience.
